Who Has Nana's Recipe?


Vegetable oil for deep fat frying
1 cup flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
¼ teaspoon salt
½ cup water
1 egg, beaten with fork
2 tablespoons sugar
Confectioners’ sugar, for dusting

Heat 3-inches of oil to 375 degrees Fahrenheit in deep fat fryer or heavy 3-quart saucepan. Combine remaining ingredients, except Confectioners’ sugar, in a large bowl, in order listed. Mix well until all ingredients come together and form a thick batter.

Scoop up one heaping teaspoonful of batter with one spoon. Lower that spoon close to the surface of the hot oil. With another spoon, push off the batter into the hot oil. Cook no more than 6 at a time. Bombolo will sink, and then float. You will need to roll them over to cook on all sides. Cook until golden brown, approximately 8 minutes. They should look similar to doughnut holes.

Remove from oil using a slotted spoon and place on paper towels to drain. Generously dust the Bombolo with Confectioners’ sugar. Serve warm.
